I hadn’t been to Southeast Asia since 1983 and decided to go to Myanmar (Burma) of all places. While tourism had been growing slightly it really started to take off after the release of Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest in 2010, further political reforms in 2011-2012 and the ease of most Western sanctions in 2012. At the time I arrived the first ever ATM’s in the country were just getting installed and credit cards weren’t accepted anywhere. Because of this, we had to bring crisp US Dollars to exchange into the local currency. Times are changing, tourists are coming, credit cards are beginning to be accepted… I was excited to be able to visit this once “forbidden fruit” country early on before waives of tourists begin to arrive.
The country was absolutely delightful and the people open and friendly. Though it takes a while to get there, it’s definitely worth the visit. I took thousands of photos during my 12 days in the country. I’ve attempted to narrow it down to the highlights of this wonderful place.
